Chevy Bolt Recall: Battery Fire Risk

What causes battery fires in Chevy Bolt vehicles?

General Motors and LG have recognized the presence of two unique manufacturing defects that have led to increased Chevy Bolt battery fire risks.

The Chevy Bolt recall is a result of problems with the LG battery in these electric vehicles.  LG-manufactured Chevy bolt batteries have suffered from quality control issues, which GM has identified as the cause for the growing number of Chevy Bolt fires.

As mentioned, the first recall was in regards to a Chevy Bolt fire hazard that was identified back in November of 2020. Since then, GM has informed their drivers that these fires and increased risk of fires are caused by the Chevy Bolt battery cell. The cells are prone to disconnecting from the car’s frame, which can lead to an electrical short that can result in a vehicle fire.

GM: Recommendations for Chevy Bolt Drivers

GM is committed to replacing defective lithium-ion battery modules in Chevy Bolt EVs and EUVs. They are in the process of notifying customers when their vehicle's replacement parts are ready.

Bolt battery fires appear to occur when Chevy Bolt EV and EUV batteries are charged to 100% capacity. To help prevent this, part of GM's interim repair strategy includes GM dealers making a software update to vehicles that prevent EV batteries from charging to 100% capacity. The software update limits vehicle charging capacity to 90%.

In the meantime, GM has made the following recommendation and instructions to decrease Chevy Bolt battery fire risks and keep their drivers safe:

  • For 2017-2018 model years: Set your vehicle to a 90 percent state of charge limitation using "Hilltop Reserve Mode."
  • For 2019-2022 model years: Set your vehicle to "Target Charge Level Mode."
  • Avoid completely depleting your battery below approximately 70 miles (113 kilometers) of the remaining range whenever possible.
  • Charge your Chevy Bolt EV and EUV vehicle more frequently.
  • Park your vehicle outside immediately after charging.
  • Do not let your Chevy EV or EUV vehicle charge indoors overnight.

GM recommends drivers who are unable to make these changes or do not feel comfortable making these changes take their vehicles to a certified GM dealer repair center to have these adjustments made as soon as possible.
