What appears to be the cause of this problem?

General Motors Engineers have discovered a software bug or some kind of software anomaly that has led to GM, Cadillac, and Chevy Vehicles not starting. This software defect in the engine control module (ECM) is attributed to creating this unusual long-crank and/or no-start condition.

General Motors Corporation encourages owners who have experienced long-crank or no start problems with their GM, Cadillac, and Chevy vehicles to contact their dealership. A certified dealer should be able to update the software to resolve this long-crank or no crank.

Driver Reported GM Long Crank Problems

As mentioned, owners of the affected vehicle makes, models, and years have reported problems starting their cars. They have also reported a noticeable long-crank condition when starting up their vehicles.

If you are a driver of one of the above vehicles and have taken your vehicle in for repair, your technician may have found DTC trouble code P12A6 on their onboard diagnostics (OBD) scanner.
