Cause of GM Shift to Park Problems

The GM class-action lawsuit cited that the source of this GM shift to park problem is that certain vehicles fail to detect when drivers shift gears into the parked position. This defect prohibits the driver's ability to shut off and lock the car, despite the vehicle being in park.

During this process, drivers have noted a shift to park message appears on the vehicle's instrument panel. It will stay there until the driver either jiggles the gear shifter or shifts through their car's gears.

Many drivers have reported having these kinds of problems in driving their vehicles. Some have reported these shift to park problems within a year from the time they purchased their car.

The GMC shift to park lawsuit alleges General Motors is aware that this has been a problem with its vehicles.

GMC has released several technical service bulletins to GM and Chevrolet dealerships addressing vehicles that have been displaying shift to park messages on the instrument display panel.

As a GM driver, you should be aware that the GM Shift to Park lawsuit alleges that  GM owners and lessees have been paying to have this problem fixed. GM service centers have been replacing the transmission drive units or the transmission control assembly park switches –– two of the primary components that may be contributing to this defect.

However, GM has been replacing these existing defective components with other defective replacement parts. This has inevitably led many drivers to have the same problem with their cars, even after one or more repairs.
