The heightened risk led FCA to strongly advise owners to park their Cherokees outdoors, distant from combustible structures or other vehicles, until the problem is rectified.

Scale of the Jeep Cherokee Power Liftgate Recall

This Jeep Cherokee power liftgate recall impacts approximately 219,000 vehicles worldwide, which includes over 132,000 in the U.S. and about 23,000 in Canada. 

This global scale underlines the pressing need for a prompt and effective solution to safeguard vehicle owners and bystanders from potential harm.

The crux of the issue lies in the design of the Jeep Cherokees. The power liftgate modules, located in areas susceptible to water, instigated FCA to begin an investigation in January 2022. 

This probe followed a pattern of cargo compartment fires in 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokees, resulting in several customer assistance records, warranty claims, and field reports linked to this issue.

This recall includes 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles. 

What to Do About the Jeep Cherokee Power Liftgate Recall

Despite the serious nature of the recall, FCA assures that there have been no reported crashes or injuries related to the Cherokee power liftgates. 

However, the absence of a concrete fix implies that Cherokee owners may need to park outside for a prolonged period, adding an inconvenience to the already troubling situation.

Recall letters will be sent out at the end of June 2023, and any Cherokees repaired under previous recalls will require the new repairs. FCA can be reached at 800-853-1403 for any immediate concerns, referencing recall number 49A.
