Subaru EyeSight Problems

A recent class-action lawsuit was filed against Subaru for issues regarding multiple defects and problems with the Subaru EyeSight system. These Subaru EyeSight problems cause the brakes on the vehicle to engage when there aren't any objects behind or in front of the vehicle.

This Subaru class-action lawsuit involves a wide array of 2013-2021 Subaru vehicles with EyeSight technology, automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems, and lane keep assist (LKA) technology.

Details on Subaru EyeSight Problems

Subaru's EyeSight driver assist technology serves three major roles in Subaru vehicles. This

  • Pre-collision braking
  • Reverse automatic braking
  • And lane keep assist (LKA)

The manufacturer's pre-collision braking technology utilizes forward facing cameras to alert drivers of a potential frontal impact. This same system has the ability to fully brake the car in an emergency situation, and even bring the car to a full stop.

The reverse automatic braking systems in Subaru vehicles use ultrasonic sensors to sense objects behind the car when it’s in reverse. It will also alert the driver of objects behind the vehicle, and automatically brake the car when necessary.

The Subaru EyeSight's lane keep assist technology uses front cameras to sense and monitor lane markings on roadways. Subaru vehicles with LKA will alert drivers if they stray over lines or sway between lanes. If the driver doesn’t respond quickly, LKA is designed to correct the steering, keeping the driver safely in-lane.

Subaru EyeSight System Defects

Issues with these systems in 2013-2021 Subaru vehicles are allegedly caused by several different factors. Namely, inadequate software calibration from several control modules within the vehicle. This includes the PCM (power steering control module).

Subaru drivers with an AEB braking system may experience that the brakes activate when there are no objects ahead of or behind their vehicle. Conversely, the automatic emergency braking system may fail to engage automatically, when there is an object or vehicle present.

These errors and poor software calibration can also cause the vehicle to correct the driver's steering when they are trying to change lanes. This is particularly the case when drivers are on a road with construction barriers and/or if there are multiple lines around a construction zone.

Problems with the LKA system can cause the vehicle to completely shut down until the driver restarts the vehicle. This Subaru class action lawsuit also details how the lane keep system can suddenly jerk the steering wheel. In some incidents, this malfunction can even steer the Subaru into other vehicles, causing a collision.

Subaru EyeSight Problems: Class Action Lawsuit

The plaintiffs in this case involving Subaru EyeSight problems indicated that Subaru failed to warn customers about the AED system, LKA system, EyeSight defect, and software calibration problems.

The U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey filed The Subaru class action lawsuit: Sampson, et al., v. Subaru of America, Inc., et al.
