Tesla Model S Battery Problems

Tesla Model S Battery Problems

Tesla is one of the most popular electric vehicle brands on the market today. In 2020 alone, they sold nearly 300,000 vehicles, giving them over 42% of the electric vehicle market share. In recent years, Tesla, Inc. has built a reputation for producing some of the highest safety-rated and most energy-efficient cars that have ever been manufactured.

However, even with a reputation for creating some of the most reliable vehicles, Tesla is not without its problems. Recent reports have indicated drivers are experiencing battery problems with Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles. In response, Tesla Inc. has agreed to settle this issue, and pay out $1.5 million to Tesla S drivers.

Fortunately, as a Tesla Model S or Model X owner, this settlement may not be your only option. Continue reading to learn more about the battery problems with Tesla Model S and X vehicles and your possible legal options as a Tesla owner or lessee.

Cause: Tesla Model S Battery Problems

Tesla, Inc. confirmed to the media that their over-the-air software updates temporarily limited the maximum battery capacity and range in 1,743 Model S sedans. Model S drivers reported that shortly after Tesla released a software update back in 2019, drivers recognized a noticeable difference in both battery performance and battery life in their Tesla Model S vehicles.

Through October 2019, Tesla worked toward reaching a settlement agreement, as their attorneys stayed in litigation over the issue. In March 2020, Tesla, Inc. rolled out another software update to correct the software and battery issue, restoring impacted Tesla owners’ vehicle batteries back to their maximum voltage over time as drivers continued to drive their vehicles.

About: Tesla Model S Settlement

The documents filed for this case with a U.S. District Court in San Francisco stated the proposed settlement would have Tesla, Inc. pay out $1.5 million into a fund that would be distributed to Tesla Model S owners (as well as other Tesla owners) that were impacted by this software and battery problem.

Including attorneys fees, this settlement total equates to Tesla paying out $625 to Model S drivers that have been affected by this software update and the resulting battery problems.

Under the terms of this agreement, Tesla will also need to provide diagnostic reporting and notifications related to any Tesla Model S drivers that experience battery issues in the future, notifying them of when their vehicles require maintenance, updating, or repairs.

Other Battery Problems with Tesla Vehicles

In May 2019, Tesla received negative publicity after one of its Model S vehicles caught fire in Hong Kong.

Soon after, Tesla released a statement addressing the issue. In addition, the automotive company released an over-the-air software update to revise the thermal management and charge settings on Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles.

This software update was intended to not only be a strong precautionary element in preventing vehicle fires in the future but was also made available to improve Tesla Model S and Model X battery performance and longevity, overall.

Suspension Problems in Tesla Model S and Model X Vehicles

Near the end of 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began an investigation on a potential safety issue affecting over 100,000 Tesla vehicles.

The investigation is for the suspension systems on 2015-2017 Tesla Model S vehicles and 2016-2017 Model Xs. NHTSA stated this suspension problem with Tesla suspensions might affect as many as 115,000 vehicles. In total, NHTSA has received 43 complaints regarding this issue, with drivers alleging failure in the right and/or left suspension force links.

Tesla addressed the problem back in a 2017 service bulletin, stating that this issue may cause the tire to contact the arch liner inside the wheel well, but that this would not impact the driver's control over the vehicle.
