Toyota Mirai Problems and Defects

Toyota launched its first hydrogen-powered vehicle in 2014 with the first generation of the Toyota Mirai. This innovation in automotive technology pushed the potential of using hydrogen to power clean and sustainable vehicles.

With that, the hydrogen-powered Mirai featured driving distance and refueling time, comparable to gas and diesel-powered vehicles. The added benefit of a hydrogen-powered car is that the only emissions from the vehicle are water.

Since then, more than 10,000 Toyota Mirai vehicles have been sold around the globe. Unfortunately, drivers have been experiencing problems that affect the functional range and performance of their Toyota Mirai vehicles.

Toyota Mirai Problems: Range Issues

The Toyota Mirai is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell which drivers can refill at hydrogen fuel stations. This technology intends to give hydrogen-powered vehicles performance and range relative to conventional, gas-powered vehicles. However, drivers have been reporting noticeable performance and range problems with their Toyota Mirai vehicles.

A recent release from Motor Trend suggested Toyota Mirai drivers are getting far less than the manufacturer-promised range of 402 miles. Many drivers report only getting an average of 230-270 miles, despite the hydrogen tank indicating it is completely full.

Driver Reported Problems with Toyota Mirai Vehicles

There are more than a handful of Toyota Mirai drivers coming forward with these issues. Our attorneys had a recent query from a Toyota Mirai owner who reported having these same issues with their vehicle:

toyota mirai defects

“I started to ask those people around me waiting in line at the hydrogen stations if they could ever get anything close to 400 miles. Consistently, I discovered they, too, could never get anything close to 400 miles. In fact, they would get nothing over 300 miles and were close to my 250-270 range.”

It appears there is some kind of software and/or hardware issue or defect with the vehicle that substantially hinders the full driving range of the vehicle.

Other Reported Toyota Mirai Problems and Recalls

Toyota previously issued a recall on 2,800 Toyota Mirai vehicles, manufactured between November 2014 and December 2016. This recall was related to a glitch in the software that shut down the vehicle's hydrogen-power system.

At the time this was released, there are no current Toyota Mirai recalls, or class actions against these range issues in Toyota Mirai vehicles. Nevertheless, if customers continue to report and complain about this problem, there's a high probability of a class action suit and a large recall in the near future.
